Haverhill City Clerk Office

The Haverhill City Clerk is the main source for death certificates in the city. The office sits at 4 Summer Street in downtown Haverhill. Staff there handle birth, death, and marriage records for anyone who needs them. If a death took place in Haverhill, this is where the original record lives. You can walk in during business hours and ask for a certified copy of a death certificate. Bring a valid photo ID. The clerk can also take mail requests if you can't make the trip in person.

To reach the office, call 978-374-2316. When you call, staff can tell you what forms to fill out and what the current fees are. Most city clerk offices in Massachusetts charge around $20 for a certified copy at the walk-in window. Mail requests may cost a bit more due to processing. Make checks payable to the City of Haverhill. Include the full name of the person, the date of death (or best guess), and your return address in your written request.

The clerk keeps Haverhill death records going back to 1850. That year is when the city started its own vital records system. For deaths before 1850, you will need to check other sources like the Haverhill Public Library or the state archives. The clerk's office does not have records from the colonial period or the early town years.

The Eagle-Tribune newspaper also serves the Haverhill and Lawrence area. It has printed obituaries for this part of Essex County for years. Back issues can be found at the library or through online newspaper archive services. Searching old issues of the Eagle-Tribune can turn up death notices that were never part of the city's official records.

Haverhill Obituary Access Rules

Death certificates in Haverhill are public records. Anyone can request one. You do not need to be a family member to get a copy. This falls under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 46, which governs how vital records are kept and shared across the state. The law says city and town clerks must issue certified copies to anyone who asks and pays the fee.

There is one limit. The cause of death is not public. Under Section 46-2A, only certain people can see that part of the record. The list includes the surviving spouse, a parent, child, sibling, legal guardian, or legal representative. If you are not on that list, the clerk will give you a copy with the cause of death left blank. Everything else on the certificate is still there, including the name, date, place of death, and age.

The Massachusetts Public Records Law adds more protections for people who want government records. Agencies must respond to requests within 10 business days. For cities with more than 20,000 people (which includes Haverhill), the first two hours of search time are free. After that, the maximum charge is $25 per hour. Standard copy fees are capped at $0.05 per page for black and white copies.
